AMBASSADOR DALIUS ČEKUOLIS CANDIDATE TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

In 2004 Lithuania informed the Group of the Eastern European States of its decision to apply for the post of the President of the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly. On 27 June 2011 the Government of Lithuania nominated Ambassador Dalius Čekuolis as a candidate to the post of the President of the General Assembly. Former Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dalius Čekuolis currently serves as Permanent Representative of the Republic of Lithuania to the United Nations. He is a distinguished diplomat, one of the longest serving Lithuanian ambassadors having been in the diplomatic service for three decades and having extensive hands-on experience of multilateral negotiations. Dalius Čekuolis has served as Lithuania's ambassador to seven countries and has also represented Lithuania in a variety of multilateral organisations and fora, including the United Nations, La Francophonie and the Council of the Baltic Sea States. Ambassador Čekuolis has developed a personal style of communication, characterised by openness, inclusiveness, and flexibility, and has shown a propensity for consensus-building, which has been instrumental in achieving concrete results while in various posts at the United Nations. Ambassador Čekuolis had the honour to serve as president of one of the main bodies of the United Nations, Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), during the implementation of the decisions adopted by the 2005 World Summit in New York. Under his leadership the ECOSOC membership carried out extensive consultations and adopted relevant decisions on the reform and adaptation of the working methods of this body. As part of the reform package implemented under the Lithuanian presidency, in 2007 ECOSOC launched the Development Cooperation Forum and the Annual Ministerial Review. He also sought to reinvigorate ECOSOC's interaction with other bodies and initiatives, organising to this effect a joint event with the Global Compact and other innovative events during the ECOSOC high level session of 2007. In 2008, under the Chairmanship of Mr Dalius Čekuolis, the impasse in considering the implementation of UN Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons was broken by adoption of the outcome document at the Third Biennial Meeting of States. In 2011 Ambassador Čekuolis co-facilitated preparation and adoption by consensus of the UN resolution on revitalization of the General Assembly. A balanced communicator, Ambassador Čekuolis is fluent English, French, Russian, Spanish as well as Portuguese.
