Strengthening Lithuanian-Swiss Cooperation in the Life Sciences Sector
On 14 September, a Lithuanian delegation led by Deputy Minister of Health of the Republic of Lithuania Daniel Naumovas visited Basel, Switzerland, one of the world’s leading centres for pharmaceuticals and life sciences.
The Lithuanian delegation visited the headquarters of the global innovative pharmaceutical company Novartis. During the meeting with senior company representatives, the Lithuanian life sciences ecosystem, the country’s potential in research and clinical expertise, and its rapidly expanding innovation infrastructure were presented, with a particular focus on cell and gene therapies, personalised medicine, and the implementation of innovative health technologies.
As Lithuania is preparing intensively for its Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2027, the delegation also presented Lithuania’s priorities, with a particular focus on innovations, the preparedness of health systems to address emerging challenges, and strengthening Europe’s competitiveness.
Members of the Lithuanian delegation also presented the activities and areas of expertise of Santaros and Kaunas Clinics, Invest Lithuania, and LithuaniaBio, the association uniting companies in Lithuania’s life sciences and biotechnology sector, and discussed potential areas for deepening and expanding cooperation with Novartis.
During the visit, the Deputy Minister and the delegation also met with Lithuanians working in the life sciences and biotechnology sectors in Basel. The meeting provided an opportunity to present Lithuania’s achievements in the life sciences sector, exchange insights and ideas, and explore potential synergies for strengthening ties between Lithuania and Lithuanian professionals working abroad.
The visit to Novartis forms part of Lithuania’s broader efforts to strengthen strategic partnerships with Swiss and international companies operating in the life sciences sector and to promote joint projects in science, healthcare, and innovation.
